The Frackville Area Historical Society is located in the Gaverick Building at the intersection of Middle and East Oak Streets. Founded in 1997 to preserve the history of Frackville, the society leased the building from the Borough the following year. The building was erected in 1911 to house the Good Will Hose Company which was incorporated the previous year. An addition was built on the West side of the building in 1949 to house the Ambulance Association.

In 1970 the Good Will Hose Company and Ambulance Association relocated to larger quarters and the building was then used for various purposes until it was vacated in 1997.

The building is in need of extensive repairs. It is the hope of the Historical Society to restore the building to its original design to house a museum and library of Frackville Area Memorabilia.

FRACKVILLE HISTORY

In 1852 Daniel Frack of St. Clair purchased 166 acres of land on Broad Mountain which included most of what is now the eastern portion of Frackville.

Samuel Haupt of Pottsville, in 1854 purchased 180 acres adjoining the Frack land on the west.

In 1861 the land of these men was laid out into town lots with broad avenues. The community grew rapidly with the development of the inclined railroad plane from Mahanoy Plane to Frackville. The first settlers were mainly of German descent and most worked on the railroad or in the nearby coal mines.

On April 10, 1876 the land of Daniel Frack and Samuel Haupt was incorporated into the Borough of Frackville. The mountain top was soon transformed from primeval timberland to a bustling community.
